A man employed at a goverment sports complex in Maharashtra, earning just INR13,000 (PKR42,640) a month, embezzled a staggering INR216 million (Rs688.8 million).  He allegedly spent thi money to gift luxury cars and an apartment to his girlfriend.

The accused, Harshal Kumar Kshirsagar, 23, worked as a contractual computer operator at the sports complex. He embezzled millions from the company by using its old letterhead and has not yet been arrested so far.

According to the police, Harshal’s colleague Yashoda Shetty and her husband BK Jeevan were apprehended on charges of facilitating him in the fraud.

The couple revealed that Harshal used an old letterhead of the sports complex to email the bank, requesting a change to the organisation's official email address.

Only one alphabet in the email address was altered, which enabled Harshal to receive OTPs and other transaction details.

Subsequently, Harshal activated the Internet banking facility of the company’s account on his mobile and began tranferring funds.

According to the police, from July 1 to December 7, he allegedly transferred INR216 million (PKR 688.8 million) to 13 bank accounts.

With this money, police said, Harshal bought a BMW car worth INR12 million, an SUV car worth INR13 million, and gifted a luxurious flat to his girlfriend near the Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar airport.

Investigations are currently ongoing as the authorities suspect that multiple individuals may have been involved in the large-scale fraud, which was executed using forged company documents.
