A 35-year-old Chinese man, known as Mr Ye, was admitted to a hospital in China after experiencing severe pain in his thigh following a cough.

The doctors at Second People’s Hospital in Fujian were shocked to discover that the thigh bone of the man, considered the hardest bone in the body, was fractured due to the cough.

Mr Ye told the doctors that he had ignored the initial pain, thinking it was just a minor issue, "but soon found it difficult to walk".

Director of the hospital's Orthopedics department Dr Dong Zhong, along with his team, conducted a series of tests, including X-rays and bone density tests, to determine the cause of the fracture.

The results revealed that Mr Ye's bone density was equivalent to that of an 80-year-old man due to his poor diet, lack of exercise, and excessive consumption of soft drinks.

The doctor said that the incident was a rare case of a femur fracture caused by a cough, typically seen in older adults.

The medical team emphasised the importance of maintaining a healthy lifestyle, including a balanced diet and regular exercise, to prevent such medical emergencies.
