A groom married his severely injured bride in a hospital after a heartbreaking accident in the Indian state of Kerala, —an emotional moment that quickly went viral on social media.

According to the Hindustan Times, Avani, a schoolteacher, was on her way to a beauty salon on 21 November for her wedding ceremony when she was involved in a road accident and sustained serious injuries.

Bystanders immediately shifted the victims to a hospital, where the bride was found to have major injuries to her spine and hip.

The accident occurred in Kumarakom, a tourist destination in Kottayam district. Avani was initially taken to Kottayam Medical College and later transferred to VPS Lakeshore Hospital for specialized treatment.

After thorough examination, the medical team began surgery in the morning and completed it by the afternoon.

Avani had suffered a severe injury to the L4 region of her spine—an area crucial for movement and stability—along with a damaged hip.

Doctors confirmed that the nerve injury had been successfully treated. They added that although it was a complicated case, the surgery proceeded as planned.

Her spine has been stabilized, pressure on the nerves has been relieved, and she is currently under observation in the Neurosciences ICU.

Despite the accident, the families of both the bride and groom decided not to cancel the ceremony and instead held the wedding in the hospital.

In the presence of doctors, nurses, and close relatives, Avani and her fiancé Sheru were married in a simple ceremony, without music, decorations or traditional festivities.

The hospital administration permitted the wedding, understanding how important the day was for the couple.

The video of the wedding taking place in the hospital’s emergency ward later went viral on social media, reminding many viewers of the 2006 Bollywood film Vivah.

Speaking to Gulf News, Sheru said they had not expected the overwhelming support they received. He added that knowing Avani’s surgery was successful gave them the hope they had been praying for.

Sheru further shared that he and Avani had been together for many years, and their families had already accepted their relationship. The wedding was scheduled for that very day, and preparations were in full swing
