Apoorva Jain, a resident of New Delhi, has sparked a debate on the tax system in India after sharing his experience of paying INR50,000 to resolve a tax dispute of just Re1.

According to Jain,  the amount was paid to a chartered accountant, a person who is qualified to take on several specific activities within the spectrum of accountancy.

Jain took to social media platform X (formerly twitter) to express his shock and frustration over the incident.

"Paid 50000/- fee to CA for an IT notice I received recently wherein the final disputed value turned out to be Re 1/. I am not joking," he wrote in the post.

The response was shared in a comments section of another post, which clarified how the Modi-led government put burden on the salaried class with taxes.

The bizarre matter has garnered a strong reaction from users, with some expressing mistrust of the Indian tax department's competence and others questioning the chartered accountant's fee system.

Users have also taken to social media to share their thoughts, with some saying "This is a clear example of how the tax system in India is flawed".

"I had a similar experience where I had to pay a huge fee for a minor tax issue," another netizen said.
