A staple food in both Pakistani and Indian cuisine, parathas are crispy flatbreads traditionally fried in oil. A viral video on social media depicting a man in India frying parathas in what is claimed to be diesel has left many paratha lovers disgusted.
The popular meal comes in a variety of fillings with 'aloo paratha' being the most popular one and anyone can add their own variations. They can be fried in ghee or oil for a crispy finish.
However, this bizarre variation of adding diesel has outraged food lovers and alarmed health professionals due to the severe health risks involved.
The video, shared by 'X' user @nebula_world, captured the vendor, Bablu, preparing the "diesel" paratha in Indian Punjab's Chandigarh.
He first rolled out the dough, stuffed it with a potato mixture, and cooked it on a pan. He then poured over it an excessive amount of the dark liquid, which he refers to as "diesel."
The dhaba owner claimed in the video that he has been "making parathas in diesel for 35 years."
The 'X' user has since deleted the video, stating that "sufficient action" has been taken.
Diesel fuel is incredibly dangerous for human consumption. Inhaling or ingesting it can lead to nausea, stomach pain, dizziness, and other serious health problems.
Indian netizens called for strict action from the authorities against the man.
Are you Kidding me? This is life threatening in a single bite," an 'X' user wrote.
"True recipe for cancer (petrol diesel wala paratha)," a post read on 'X'
