In a bizarre incident, a woman has filed for a Khula (divorce) from her husband after the latter refused to buy her 'sand' to eat, it emerged on Monday.
According to Egyptian media, the wife had been making this unusual demand, which surprised her husband and his family.
The husband, who is a veterinary doctor, researched about his wife's unusual habit and found that some people "eat soil in rare cases".
However, the husband was unable to fulfill her demand due to the high cost of importing the "specific type of sand" she wanted.
According to the lawyer, the wife's demand for sand increased after she became pregnant, and her husband had ordered it online several times from abroad.
However, due to financial obligations and the high cost of the sand, the husband decided not to buy it anymore.
The wife, who was unwilling to accept her spouse's decision, left her husband's house and filed a divorce case, also claiming pregnancy expenses, including a demand for 9,000 Egyptian pounds to buy the sand.
The husband filed an appeal against the wife's claims, arguing that soil is not a basic necessity. The court also rejected her petition.
Notably, Khula is a legal term in Islamic law that refers to a woman's right to seek a divorce from her husband.
