Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif officially inaugurated the CM Punjab Free Solar Panel Scheme on Friday, aimed at alleviating electricity expenses for low-consumption households across the province.
The initiative will provide long-term financial relief to 100,000 consumers, with a focus on those using minimal electricity.
How to apply?
The application process for the scheme is now open, allowing consumers to apply via an online portal at cmsolarscheme.punjab.gov.pk or by sending their details through SMS to 8800.
Applications will be verified through the reference and CNIC numbers listed on applicants' electricity bills. A computerised ballot system will then be used to ensure fairness and transparency in the selection process.
A helpline will be set up shortly to assist consumers with the application process.
The provincial Secretary for Energy shared further details of the scheme, revealing that 550-watt solar systems will be provided to 52,019 households that consume up to 100 units of electricity per month.
Additionally, 1,100-watt systems will be allocated to those with monthly consumption of up to 200 units. The scheme is planned to be fully rolled out over the course of one year.
To prevent misuse, the solar panels and inverters will be directly linked to the consumer’s CNIC. The installation of these solar systems is expected to reduce carbon emissions by 57,000 tons and lessen the subsidy burden on the federal government.
During the ceremony, the Chief Minister said that that 7.3 million consumers in Punjab have already benefited from a Rs. 14 per unit subsidy on electricity.
She further stated that this solar initiative is another step towards improving the welfare of the public through effective use of government resources.
