The National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra) has decided to retain the existing net metering policy for current solar consumers.

In this regard, Nepra issued a notification on proposed amendments today and invited public feedback within 30 days.

The updated framework will come into effect on February 9, 2026.

Under the new regulations, surplus electricity generated by new solar consumers will be purchased at Rs 11 per unit.

Additionally, the duration of agreements with new consumers has been reduced from seven years to five years.

Existing registered solar users will continue under the current net metering regime, but significant changes have been introduced for new consumers.

Last week, Nepra issued a notification ending the net metering policy in Pakistan and replacing it with a net billing system.

The authority also introduced the “Solar Consumers Regulations 2026,” outlining the updated structure for new entrants into the distributed generation system.

The revised framework also removes a key benefit previously available under net metering, the unit-for-unit adjustment mechanism, which allowed consumers to offset exported electricity directly against their consumption.
