Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for a further reduction in electricity rates and a swift implementation of a strategy for future electricity generation in Pakistan.
Leading a meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister directed that low-cost power projects should be prioritized and that local resources be used as much as possible for power generation.
Shehbaz Sharif was briefed on the ongoing progress of hydropower projects, which he identified as a sustainable and cost-effective source of electricity.
He further proposed converting existing power generation to solar energy, noting Pakistan’s abundant solar potential and the global trend toward solar power.
PM Shehbaz also directed the immediate closure of inefficient power plants that waste fuel while generating low electricity. He instructed authorities to take action against any officials obstructing reforms in the power sector.
In addition to addressing power generation, Shehbaz Sharif urged the acceleration of reforms in the power transmission system, advocating for modernization to meet international standards.
He called for the swift implementation of a system to prioritise and transmit low-cost electricity, with all reforms to be completed within the set deadlines.
