Karachi: Faisal Edhi has claimed they are receiving the majority of bodies from the loadshedding-hit areas of Karachi.
According to Faisal Edhi, "Our morgues receive 30 to 40 bodies daily, but this number has been increasing every day over the past six days. Most of these bodies are coming from areas affected by loadshedding."
Faisal Edhi revealed that doctors never attribute the cause of death to the heatwave. "Even if someone dies from a bullet wound, the cause of death is recorded as heart or brain failure."
Faisal Edhi stated that the purpose of sharing these statistics is to alert the authorities to the danger. "We also accept bodies at the Edhi morgue with just the identification card. Often, people don’t take the deceased to the hospital first but bring them to the morgue after confirmation from a neighborhood doctor."
Faisal Edhi has also expressed support for the rally against loadshedding scheduled for June 30.
Meanwhile, Karachi Commissioner Syed Hassan Naqvi has refuted the reports of high heat-related deaths amid ongoing scorching weather in the port city.
He said that only ten deaths were reported due to heatstroke in two days.
Speaking to the journalists in his office, Naqvi directed institutions, including NGOs, not to collect data on fatalities on their own and to get confirmation from authorities and administration before sharing data.
“The figures circulating regarding the excessive deaths have not been verified,” said the commissioner.
