Bollywood star Saif Ali Khan's attacker was apprehended nearly 70 hours after the incident as the Indian police traced his movements through a local vendor where he had purchased a paratha and a water bottle.
The suspect, identified as Mohammad Sharif-ul-Islam Shehzad, was tracked by law enforcement following an intensive investigation launched on Thursday.
The incident reportedly occurred at Saif's residence in the early hours of Thursday, around 2:30 am, when an intruder entered Khan’s home. The actor engaged in a scuffle to prevent the burglary, during which he was stabbed.
The Hum Tum star underwent urgeries and is currently receiving further medical treatment at the hospital.
Indian media reported that Khan suffered multiple injuries over his body. However, his back is stable following surgery, and he is able to move his hands and legs. His condition remains stable.
According to police reports, Shehzad stayed at a bus stop near Patwardhan Garden in Bandra after fleeing Saif Ali Khan’s residence. He then boarded a train to Worli.
CCTV footage later captured Shehzad stopping at a food stall near Century Mill in Worli. The police contacted the vendor and obtained details of Shehzad's payment, made through UPI via Google Pay, for a paratha and a water bottle.
This transaction provided his mobile number, enabling the authorities to track his location.
He was found sleeping in a dense mangrove cluster near a labor camp in Kasarvadavali, Thane. When police attempted to wake him, he tried to flee but was apprehended.
Shehzad confessed to being involved in the attack on Saif Ali Khan. A Mumbai court granted the police a five-day physical remand of the suspect for further investigation.
Earlier reports suggested that Shehzad was a Bangladeshi immigrant who had illegally entered India, but police dismissed these claims, stating that he had been living in Mumbai with his family for the past seven years.
