A severe disruption in the supply chain due to travel restrictions in Lahore and other parts of the country has led to a significant surge in prices of perishable goods, including fruits and vegetables.
According to reports, the prices of essential items such as potatoes, onions, tomatoes, garlic, and ginger have increased sharply, causing hardship for consumers.
Potatoes are now selling for Rs180-200 per kilogram, exceeding the official price range of Rs127-135 per kilogram. Onions have also seen a significant price hike, with A-grade varieties retailing at Rs180-200 per kilogram.
Tomatoes, a staple in many Pakistani households, are now selling at Rs300-340 per kilogram, nearly double the government-fixed price of Rs170-180 per kilogram.
The price of garlic and ginger has also increased, with local garlic selling for Rs620 per kilogram and Chinese garlic retailing at Rs1,000 per kilogram.
Fruits such as bananas, apples, and pomegranates have also witnessed significant price increases, with A-category bananas selling at Rs160-180 per dozen and apples reaching up to Rs450 per kilogram.
The supply chain crisis has raised concerns about food security and the impact on low-income households. The government has been urged to take immediate action to address the issue and provide relief to affected consumers.
