The Pakistan Metrological Department (PMD) Friday said that four spells of heavy rain coupled with thunderstorms are likely to hit the port city today (March 1).

In view of the heavy rain forecast, the Sindh government has declared a rain-emergency in the metropolis.

The Sindh School Education and Literacy Department also announced the suspension of evening classes in all government and private schools across Sindh.

However, several areas of Karachi received light to moderate rain early Friday morning.

Earlier, the Met Office said torrential downpours with thunderstorms are likely in Karachi, Sukkur, Larkana, Dadu, Shaheed Benazirabad, Hyderabad, Thatta and other cities from March 1 and March 2 under the strong westerly wave system.

Isolated hailstorms in some parts of Karachi are also likely during the period, it added.

On the other hand, Mayor Karachi Murtaza Wahab requested citizens to "avoid unnecessary movement to avert any inconvenience" during the rain.
