Gwadar has been declared “calamity-hit” after hours-long torrential rains triggered flash floods and inundated most parts of the port city, Balochistan’s interim Information Minister Jan Achakzai announced Thursday.

According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), Gwadar has received over 183mm of rain in the last two days, crippling daily life and rendering hundreds of people homeless.

Jan Achakzai, the Caretaker Information Minister, affirmed that the chief minister had endorsed a declaration acknowledging the calamitous situation in Gwadar. Furthermore, Achakzai emphasized that the chief minister is actively overseeing the relief operations in the affected areas, demonstrating a commitment to addressing the urgent needs of the community.

The impact of the recent rains has been profound, with significant portions of Gwadar submerged and vital road connections severed following the heavy rainfall on February 27. The perilous conditions prompted the rescue of 25 families, while tragically, seven houses succumbed to the force of nature.

The historic core of the city remains inundated, exacerbating the challenges faced by residents. Additionally, localities such as New Town, Shambey Ismail Ward, and Faqeerabad have borne the brunt of the deluge, sustaining considerable damage to infrastructure and property.

Expressing frustration and disillusionment, Sharif Miandad, the Chairman of Gwadar’s Municipal Committee, lamented the lack of support from governmental departments.

Miandad criticized what he perceived as a prioritization of symbolic gestures over substantive action, accusing authorities of indulging in photo opportunities instead of providing tangible assistance to those in need. itigate the unfolding crisis.
