Imran Khan, Bushra Bibi get room coolers in jail amid heatwave

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and his spouse, Bushra Bibi, have been provided with room coolers in their cells at Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi to safeguard their health during the extreme heat, sources said on Wednesday.

According to prison sources, PTI vice chairman and former foreign minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who is also imprisoned in the cipher case, has also received the same facility.

The jail authorities have implemented precautionary measures for other prisoners as the country grapples with a severe heatwave that poses risks of dehydration and other health issues.

Inmates at Adiala Jail have been provided with cold water, while air coolers have been installed throughout the prison. 

Additionally, the jail administration is distributing beverages to mitigate the effects of the heatwave on prisoners' health.

Islamabad and Rawalpindi, like other cities, are experiencing extreme temperatures, with the current heatwave expected to persist until next week.

Hospitals reported an increase in heat-related cases, ranging from mild conditions such as swelling, rashes, and muscle cramps to more severe problems like heat exhaustion, fainting, and even heat stroke.

PTI has repeatedly demanded the release of its party members, alleging that Imran Khan is incarcerated on false charges. 

The former ruling party has also frequently raised concerns about the health of Bushra Bibi during her detention.

The 71-year-old politician and Bushra Bibi were granted bail in the Toshakhana case by the Islamabad High Court in April. 

However, the couple will remain behind bars in the "unlawful marriage case".
