Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa had declined a farewell dinner traditionally hosted in honor of outgoing CJP at public expense.
Citing concerns over the use of government funds, Justice Isa refused to partake in the event, which would have cost approximately Rs. 2 million.
The Supreme Court's Registrar Office had sent a formal letter as per tradition, requesting arrangements for a farewell dinner for retiring judges and the Chief Justice. However, Justice Isa, in his response, expressed that such an event was unnecessary, particularly as it involved spending public money.
The decision marks a significant first in the history of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, where a farewell dinner will not be held for a retiring judge or Chief Justice.
Meanwhile, preparations for the Full Court Reference are underway. An invitation letter for the reference, scheduled for October 25 at 10:30 AM, has been sent to the Attorney General. The Assistant Registrar's letter clarified that although a farewell dinner is customary, Justice Isa has opted out of it.
Justice Qazi Faez Isa is set to retire on October 25, 2024, and a Full Court Reference will be held in Courtroom No. 1 to mark the occasion. The Supreme Court Registrar also requested the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association to submit their speech in advance for the event.
