In a tragic development, the body of seven-year-old Sarim, who went missing 11 days ago, was discovered in an underground water tank on Saturday near his home in North Karachi.
According to the police, it seems that Sarim accidentally fell into the tank, and it is also possible that someone threw him into it.
“The family identified his body by his clothing; however, the police took the body into custody to conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death,” stated a police spokesperson.
Subsequently, the police launched a probe into the matter.
Earlier, the parents of Sarim, who was allegedly kidnapped on January 7, had claimed to have received messages from an international number demanding ransom in exchange for their son's release.
However, it was later discovered that the miscreant had a history of defrauding others through fake calls.
"I don’t know if my son has worn his jacket or not if he’s eaten anything or not," the mother said in grief.
The parents revealed that the madrassah instructor was arrested on suspicion and based on complaints from neighbours and some unusual or offensive material that police allegedly found on his cellphone.
Apart from the police investigation, Inspector General Police (IGP) Ghulam Nabi Memon constituted a special unit for missing children, but Sarim’s case was not transferred there so far.
