Netizens slam Maulana Fazlur Rehman for hosting lavish Valima reception of son amidst economic turmoil

Jamiat Ulema-e-Islam (JUI-F) head, Maulana Fazlur Rehman, faced severe backlash from netizens for hosting an extravagant valima reception for his son, Maulana Asjad Mehmood, amidst the economic turmoil in the cash-strapped country, Pakistan.

The lavish celebration, which took place in Islamabad on Friday, was attended by prominent political personalities, including Caretaker Prime Minister Anwarul Haq Kakar, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari, Interim Punjab Chief Minister Mohsin Naqvi, and others.

Netizens took to social media platform, X, to express their discontent, questioning the appropriateness of such extravagance, particularly when the general public is grappling with financial challenges. 

The social media users also argued that the event's opulence stood in stark contrast to the teachings of simplicity and humility often emphasised by religious leaders, including Maulana Fazlur Rehman himself.

The critics pointed out that religious figures urge their followers to adopt a modest and frugal lifestyle, yet events such as these appear to be exempt from such guidance.
