An accountability court on Friday sentenced former prime minister Imran Khan to 10 years in prison and his wife Bushra Bibi to seven years in the Al-Qadir Trust case.

Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, have faced a series of serious allegations since former's ousting from office in 2022. Here are some of the major legal cases they are entangled in:

Land Corruption Case (Graft Allegations)

  • Convicted on January 17, 2025, for receiving land from real estate developer Malik Riaz during Imran’s tenure as Prime Minister (2018-2022) in exchange for illegal favours.
  • The couple allegedly received land worth up to Rs7 billion ($25.12 million) through the Al-Qadir University Trust, which was created in 2018.
  • PTI maintains the land was donated for charitable purposes.

State Gifts Scandal

  • Arrested on August 5, 2023, on charges of selling state gifts valued over Rs140 million during his time in office.
  • The gifts were allegedly public property, but Imran and Bushra denied the allegations.

Abetting Violence on May 9, 2023

  • Facing anti-terrorism charges for inciting violence following his arrest on May 9, 2023.
  • Several of his supporters have been sentenced in connection with the violence, and Imran himself faces trial for his role in the attacks on military institutions, including the army’s General Headquarters in Rawalpindi.

Leaking State Secrets

  • Accused of making public a classified cable from Pakistan’s ambassador in Washington in 2022 while still in office.
  • Imran was acquitted in this case in June 2024.

Unlawful Marriage

  • Imran and Bushra were accused of violating Islamic law by not observing the required waiting period between Bushra’s divorce and their marriage in 2018.
  • They were acquitted of the charges in July 2024.
