The Sindh government announced an increase in the fare of the People’s Bus Service in Karachi, with adjustments ranging from 20% to 60% on different routes.
The new fare structure, which will come into effect on February 1, sets the minimum fare at Rs 50 and the maximum fare at Rs 100.
The government issued a notice informing the public about the fare hike, ensuring that the updated prices are displayed on buses across various routes for transparency and timely information.
During a press conference at the Karachi Press Club, Senior Provincial Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon addressed the decision, noting that more than 100,000 passengers use the Red Line bus service daily.
He also highlighted that the government currently subsidizes over Rs 50 per passenger each day.
Memon further clarified that while the subsidy on the People’s Bus Service has been reduced, it has not been eliminated.
He explained that the reduction in subsidy would allow for the purchase of additional buses, including electric vehicles (EVs), to enhance the city’s public transportation network.
The provincial cabinet has already proposed this change, aimed at expanding the fleet and improving service delivery.
The increase in fare and the adjustments to the subsidy are part of the government's ongoing efforts to balance sustainability and growth within Karachi’s public transportation system.
