Two prominent US Congress members have called on their government to play a role in securing the release of former Pakistani prime minister and PTI founder Imran Khan.
Congressmen Joe Wilson and August Pfluger have claimed that Imran Khan is facing politically motivated cases and judicial persecution similar to US President Donald Trump.
In a joint letter dated February 25, they urged US Secretary of State Marco Rubio to engage with Pakistan to ensure Khan’s release.
Wilson also shared the letter on social media platform X, stating that August Pfluger and I are urging Secretary Rubio to push for the restoration of democracy in Pakistan and the release of Imran Khan.
The letter emphasised that Pakistan-US relations are strongest when built on the foundation of freedom, adding that Khan remains widely popular in Pakistan.

Earlier, Joe Wilson announced that he is preparing to introduce the ‘Pakistan Democracy Act’ in US Congress to impose sanctions on those responsible for the conviction of former prime minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan.
In a statement on X, Wilson stated that the proposed legislation would target individuals within the Pakistani government involved in Khan’s "persecution and imprisonment."
“I am grateful to share that I am drafting the PAKISTAN DEMOCRACY ACT to ban from the United States those in the Pakistan military government responsible for the wrongful persecution and imprisonment of Imran Khan,” he posted on X.
