WhatsApp will stop supporting Android devices running on the KitKat OS (Android 4.4) or older versions starting from January 1, 2025, Meta confirmed.

This move is designed to align with the app's ongoing updates that include enhanced encryption, multi-device support, and AI-based features—innovations that require modern hardware and software to function effectively.

Older devices, which can't keep up with these advancements, become more vulnerable to cyber threats due to the lack of timely updates.

Consequently, such devices will be unable to provide the security needed to protect user data, and users will experience limited app functionality.

Affected devices include:

  • Samsung: Galaxy S3, Galaxy Note 2, Galaxy Ace 3, Galaxy S4 Mini
  • Motorola: Moto G (1st Gen), Razr HD, Moto E 2014
  • HTC: One X, One X+, Desire 500, Desire 601
  • LG: Optimus G, Nexus 4, G2 Mini, L90
  • Sony: Xperia Z, Xperia SP, Xperia T, Xperia V

Additionally, iPhone users with devices running iOS 15.1 or lower (such as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6 Plus) must update their software or upgrade their devices by May 5, 2025, to continue using WhatsApp.

This decision reflects WhatsApp's commitment to maintaining the app's performance and security in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
