A newly-wed girl, who had married of her own free will, was burnt alive by her husband in Bahawalnagar, it emerged on Wednesday.

The victim identified as Saba from Faqirwali, contracted a court marriage with Ali Raza, who lived in Habib Town.

According to the police, the couple resided at Chak 50/4-R in Haroonabad. Ali Raza subjected his wife to physical abuse and accused her of engaging in extra-marital affairs.

He continued to torture her and one day burnt his body alive after an argument, police added.

Raza told his in-laws On July 28 that Saba had not returned home after leaving due to an argument with him.

The following day, Saba's charred body was discovered in a field.

Saba's husband confessed to his in-laws that he had burned her alive. A case was then lodged against him and unidentified suspects.

The accused recorded his statement during the investigation, stating that he killed his spouse for honour and revealed that his sister and brother-in-law were also involved in the murder.

Local police told the media that Ali accused Saba of infidelity and having relationships with other people.

He severely tortured her before setting her on fire and disposing of her dead body in the field.
