The Sindh government has constituted a high-level investigative committee to probe the death of a doctor, who was accused of blasphemy, during a police encounter in Mirpurkhas.
A notification has been issued, appointing DIG Shaheed Benazirabad, Pervaiz Chandio, as the head of the committee. The members include DIG Hyderabad Tariq Dharejo and SSP Shieeaz Nazeer.
The police in Mirpurkhas reported that the accused doctor was killed in a police encounter after being arrested on blasphemy charges. Following the incident, police officers involved were given a hero's welcome.
Local sources stated that the body was handed over to the family, who took it to their ancestral village in Umerkot for burial. However, a mob prevented the burial in the cemetery and set the body on fire. The remains were later buried in a separate ceremony.
In response to these events, Sindh's Interior Minister, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjhar, contacted the IGP Sindh, leading to the formation of the investigative committee. The committee has been tasked with submitting a report within seven days.
Meanwhile, SSP Mirpurkhas Asad Chaudhry has been removed from his position, and SSP Tharparkar Shabbir Ahmed Sethar has been given additional charge of the district.
