India reignites debate over CT venue shift from Pakistan amid stadium renovation delays

Following the failure to shift the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 from Pakistan to another country, Indian media ignited another controversy regarding the upgrading of Pakistan’s stadiums, including Karachi’s National Stadium, Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium, and Rawalpindi Stadium.

On Wednesday, the Times of India reported that construction work at the mentioned stadiums had not been completed, which made the ICC  “worried about the status of the stadiums.” 

The Times of India quoted sources, saying, “It’s a no-brainer what would happen if the PCB misses the deadlines and the venues don’t meet the ICC checklist.”

Furthermore, the article suggested that delays in the upgrading process increased the chances of the venue being moved.

However, the controversy weakened after the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the tri-nation series set to begin on February 19 and continue until March 9. The series will feature 15 matches among three teams: Pakistan, New Zealand, and South Africa.

This series will be held in Karachi's National Stadium and Lahore’s Qaddafi Stadium, both of which are nearing completion for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

It is pertinent to mention here that Lahore’s ionic cricket stadium was renovated with the addition of a new seating capacity of 35,000. Meanwhile, the broadcasting facilities were upgraded with two large display screens.

However, the hospitality areas for players will be completed by January 2. 

Similarly, the National Bank Stadium in Karachi was also revamped with 350 LED lights for better broadcast visibility and an additional 5,000 seats. 

However, PCB assured the ICC officials that the upgraded venues will host matches with world-class facilities for both players and fans.
