Karim Benzema, the 36-year-old former Real Madrid star, is reportedly contemplating retirement from professional football at the end of the current season.
The French striker, who now plays for Saudi Arabian club Al-Ittihad, enjoyed a stellar 14-year career at Real Madrid, where he became one of the club’s all-time greats.
Benzema had a challenging first season in the Middle East following his move to Al-Ittihad in 2023, but has since regained form, netting 10 goals in 10 games so far this season under manager Laurent Blanc.
His current tally puts him just two goals behind top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic and on par with Cristiano Ronaldo.
Despite his strong return to form, Benzema is said to be evaluating his future, with reports from Relevo suggesting that he may decide to retire sooner than expected.
Benzema currently earns a reported £86 million per year with his contract at Al-Ittihad, which is set to run until 2026.
However, the Saudi club may not be opposed to his retirement, as it would relieve them of a substantial financial commitment.
In addition to considering his retirement, Benzema is believed to be eyeing a potential future role with Real Madrid, who are reportedly interested in recruiting him as a club ambassador.
Given his strong connections to the Middle East, the Spanish club sees his marketability in the region as an asset.
Benzema’s illustrious career includes 354 goals in 648 appearances for Real Madrid, where he won 25 trophies, including five UEFA Champions League titles.
He also claimed the prestigious Ballon d’Or in 2022 after a remarkable season in which he scored 44 goals in 46 matches.
