Pakistani umpire injured in 2009 attack appointed by ICC to officiate Champions Trophy matches

Pakistani umpire Ahsan Raza, who was critically injured in the 2009 terrorist attack on Sri Lanka’s cricket team in Lahore, has been appointed among the 12 umpires selected by the International Cricket Council (ICC) to officiate matches in the Champions Trophy 2025.

On March 3, 2009, Sri Lanka’s cricket team was en route from their hotel to Gaddafi Stadium for their second Test match against Pakistan when their convoy was ambushed by terrorists who opened fire and launched rockets.

Despite the attack, the brave bus driver managed to steer the team safely to the stadium. The tragic incident claimed the lives of six policemen and two civilians.

During the attack, Raza sustained multiple gunshot wounds, affecting his lungs, liver, and legs. He slipped into a coma and was unable to walk for an extended period. His injuries required 88 stitches, and in 2019, he underwent another surgery, receiving 40 additional stitches.

Despite facing numerous medical complications, Raza never lost hope. His resilience and determination led to a remarkable recovery, allowing him to return to the field as an international umpire.

His appointment to officiate Champions Trophy matches holds historic significance, as Pakistan hosts its first major ICC tournament since the 2009 attack.

Raza is set to officiate the following matches:

Australia vs England – February 22, Lahore

Bangladesh vs New Zealand – February 24, Rawalpindi

Afghanistan v England, 26 February – Lahore

South Africa vs England – March 1, Karachi
