Cricketer Umar Akmal came to the defense of former Pakistan captain Babar Azam during a podcast appearance, responding strongly to criticism over the batter’s recent form.
Speaking on Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast during the coverage of a Pakistan Super League (PSL 10) match between Islamabad United and Peshawar Zalmi, Akmal reacted sharply when another guest suggested Babar Azam should not be part of the Pakistan national squad.
Akmal, who is also Babar Azam’s cousin, responded emotionally, saying, “Babar Azam was the captain of Pakistan for five years — how can you say this?”
He emphasised that temporary poor form should not overshadow Babar's contributions. “If Babar is going through a difficult spell, should we speak about him this way?” Akmal added.
The comments come at a time when Babar Azam is facing scrutiny over his performance in the ongoing PSL season, with critics pointing to a lack of runs.
Earlier, fellow cricketer Sohaib Maqsood publicly advised Babar to consider stepping down from Peshawar Zalmi’s captaincy to focus on his batting.
Despite the criticism, Akmal’s remarks highlighted the continued support Babar enjoys within the cricketing fraternity.
