The highly contagious disease has affected children younger than nine months as well as older adults.

The federal government on Wednesday directed strict and enhanced health surveillance at all entry points of the country in the wake of regional alerts about the Nipah virus, a highly lethal zoonotic virus.

"There are no medicines, vaccination activities, access to safe water, hygiene, or food. A notable number of diarrhea cases among infants have been observed."
