Rickshaw drivers have expressed disappointment after the DIG Traffic decided to ban all rickshaws from the roads except those equipped with meters.
Speaking to Dialogue Pakistan, several drivers voiced concerns over the decision, saying it would further increase the financial burden on low-income families.
One driver said, "Dig sahab ko bolnay se koi takleef to nahi hui, ek rrikshaw to nai hazaron rikshaw hain."
He also added, "hazaron gareeb chotay baray bachy hain kese guzara kr rhy hain, kiraya nai barhaty, 'matti khaengy kya.' Meter ka koi system hai, koi qanoon hai aagr hai to batain."
Another rickshaw driver said he earns only Rs500 to Rs600 on many days, adding, "pooray din mein 500-600 kamata hu, sawari lagay na lagay rab k hath mein hai. 'ab mein 1000 rs subha se sham tk kama raha hu, to meter kahan se lagaonga bhai mujhe batao'."
He further said, "gareeb to dabta hi jarha hai, ameer uper aye jarha hai, hum apny bachon tk ko nai parha parhy. Hum gareeb hain hamara koi khayal nai kr rha."
Meanwhile, another driver took a more measured view, saying, "govt ne kuch soch samjh k kia hoga."
A different rickshaw driver simply remarked, "allah dekhega."
