Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, a Palestinian doctor and director of Kamal Adwan Hospital in northern Gaza, has been detained by Israeli forces since December 27, 2024.
His disappearance occurred after Israeli forces raided and shut down the hospital, and released Palestinians claim to have seen him at Sde Teiman Israeli prison, notorious for its human rights abuses, including torture and sexual violence.
He is being held on suspicion of “involvement in terrorist activities”, the occupation forces alleged, and accused him of “holding a rank” in Hamas. The Israeli military have not disclosed his whereabouts and human rights groups have raised concerns for his wellbeing.
Dr. Abu Safiya's bravery and commitment to his medical work have earned him recognition as a human rights defender. Despite the Israeli military's orders to evacuate the hospital, he refused to abandon his patients, fearing for their safety. Tragically, his son was killed by a drone strike while sheltering at the hospital with his family.
The international community, including human rights advocates and healthcare professionals, is demanding Dr. Abu Safiya's immediate release. His detention is widely seen as a violation of international law and humanitarian principles.
The Israeli authorities must disclose his whereabouts, grant him access to a lawyer, and ensure his protection from torture and other ill-treatment.
