Israel's long history of targeted assassinations against Hamas leaders has claimed another prominent figure, with the recent killing of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran.
Earlier today, Iranian state media reported that Haniyeh was killed in an attack at his residence in Tehran.
"Early this morning, the residence of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran was struck, resulting in his and one of his bodyguards' martyrdom. The cause is under investigation and will be announced soon," a statement issued by the Revolutionary Guards read.
Haniyeh was in Tehran to attend the swearing-in ceremony of newly-elected Iran’s President Masoud Pezeshkian on Tuesday.
The latest incident marks the fifth high-profile assassination of a Hamas leader by Israel since 1996.
In January 1996, Israel's campaign of targeted killings began with the assassination of Yahya Ayyash, Hamas's military leader, in Gaza's Beit Lahiya.
Eight years later, in March 2004, Israeli forces killed Hamas's spiritual leader and founder, Sheikh Ahmed Yasin, in a strike in Gaza.
Just a month later, in April 2004, Yasin's successor and Hamas co-founder, Abdel Aziz al-Rantisi, was also killed by an Israeli helicopter missile strike in the enclave region.
The killing of senior Hamas official Saleh al-Arouri in an Israeli drone strike occurred in Beirut in January 2024.
And now, with the assassination of Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran, it is clear that Israel's campaign of targeted killings remains ongoing.
A day earlier, Israel claimed that it assassinated the senior commander of Hezbollah in a targeted attack in southern Beirut on Wednesday evening.
However, the claims were denied by Hezbollah but confirmed that its commander had survived the attack.
