Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has been transferred to a safe location inside the country after the killing of Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah, two regional officials briefed by Tehran told Reuters on Saturday.

The sources said Iran was in constant contact with Lebanon’s Hezbollah and other groups to determine the next step after Israel announced that it had killed Hezbollah chief Hassan Nasrallah in a strike on south Beirut on Friday.

Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli military said it killed Hezbollah leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah in an airstrike on the group’s central headquarters in the southern suburbs of Beirut a day earlier, Reuters reports.

Later, Hezbollah confirmed its leader Hassan Nasrallah had been killed in the Israeli airstrike.

"Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, has joined his great, immortal martyr comrades whom he led for about 30 years," Hezbollah said in a statement.

The Israeli military said earlier that Nasrallah was eliminated in a "targeted strike" on Friday on the group's underground headquarters beneath a residential building in Dahiyeh - a Hezbollah-controlled southern suburb of Beirut.

"The strike was conducted while Hezbollah’s senior chain of command were operating from the headquarters and advancing terrorist activities against the citizens of the State of Israel," it said.
