Tehran: Iranian singer Parastoo Ahmadi, 27, was arrested for performing without a hijab during a virtual concert streamed on YouTube, foreign media reported.
The arrest took place on Saturday in the city of Sari, located in Iran's Mazandaran province.
According to her lawyer, Parastoo Ahmadi uploaded a video of her concert online, where she performed without wearing the mandatory hijab.
In her video, Ahmadi expressed her feelings: "I am a girl who wants to sing for the people I love. This is a right I cannot ignore.”
The video of her virtual concert has garnered over 1.5 million views on YouTube, drawing significant attention globally.
Iran has passed a new law regarding the hijab, imposing strict penalties for violations. The law will come into effect once signed by the president.
According to foreign news agencies, the new law mandates that women in Iran must wear a scarf, and those failing to properly wear the scarf or cover their hair completely in public may face fines.
Under the law, it will also be prohibited to roll up sleeves above the wrists.
