Doha: After 15 months and a week of intense conflict, Israel and Hamas have finalized a ceasefire and hostage exchange agreement.

Qatari Prime Minister Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al Thani announced on Wednesday that the accord was achieved through diplomatic efforts led by Qatar, Egypt, and the United States.

The ceasefire will take effect from January 19, with the initial phase involving the release of Israeli hostages and Palestinian prisoners, along with the repatriation of displaced Palestinians to their homes.

Since the outbreak of hostilities on October 7, 2023, Gaza endured the impact of 85,000 tons of explosives. Over 47,000 Palestinians lost their lives, and more than 115,000 were injured.

Thousands remain unaccounted for under the rubble, and experts estimate that it may take over a decade to rebuild Gaza entirely.

The conflict displaced 2 million Palestinians, who now await the opportunity to return to their homes. Key Hamas leaders, including Ismail Haniyeh in Tehran and Yahya Sinwar in Gaza, were killed during the fighting.

First Phase: Exchange of Israeli hostages and Palestinian detainees.

Second Phase: Withdrawal of Israeli forces from public areas and the release of additional prisoners.

Third Phase: Complete Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza and initiation of Gaza’s reconstruction.

Hamas called the agreement a testament to the sacrifices and resilience of the Palestinian people, describing it as a victory for the Palestinian cause, the Muslim community, and the broader international community advocating for freedom.

Israeli authorities allege that 98 hostages remain in Hamas custody, while others were either released last year or killed during Israeli strikes.

This agreement is viewed as a significant step toward ending a prolonged and devastating conflict, raising hopes for peace and rebuilding in the region.
