A nationwide protest is underway in India following the brutal rape and murder of a female trainee doctor, Moumita Debnath, at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata.

The incident came to light on August 9 when Debnath's body was found half-naked and bearing signs of severe physical torture in the seminar hall.

The family initially received misinformation from hospital administrators, who claimed that the 31-year-old had committed suicide.

However, the autopsy report confirmed that Debnath was raped before being murdered.

The medic had gone to a room in the hospital to take rest during her 36-hour shift, Indian media said.

According to local news channel, the police have detained a suspect and are investigating the incident.

Debnath's diary, which she wrote in before her night shift, revealed her dreams and aspirations.

In an interview, her father shared that she wanted to top her MD course exams, become a gold medalist, and serve in the medical field.

He described her as a bookworm who worked hard to achieve her goals.
