Activists in Novi Pazar, Serbia, honoured Khaled Nabhan by displaying a banner featuring the image of the Palestinian grandfather and his granddaughter, Reem, who were both killed by Israeli forces in Gaza.
Nabhan, whose three-year-old granddaughter, Reem, was killed by Israel last year, died on Monday in an Israeli strike on the Nuseirat camp in central Gaza.
A video from last year, showing Nabhan bidding farewell to his granddaughter and calling her the "soul of my soul" as he hugged her lifeless body, garnered international attention on social media.
Nabhan's death sent shockwaves across social media, with pro-Palestinian supporters expressing grief over the loss of a figure known for his kindness amidst the devastation in Gaza.
Abu Diaa had become a beloved Palestinian figure on social media after he was seen bidding farewell to his deceased granddaughter and calling her "soul of my soul," a heartfelt expression he used to describe the young girl, who was also killed in an earlier Israeli attack.
He was known to wear his grandson's medal and his granddaughter’s earring as a brooch, precious keepsakes left behind after they were killed during the Israeli genocide in the besieged Palestinian enclave.
Abu Diaa became a symbol of resilience and love after a viral video showed him bidding an emotional farewell to his deceased granddaughter, whom he adored deeply.
He was known for consoling grieving families, engaging in humanitarian work, and even caring for Gaza’s stray cats.
