A powerful earthquake measuring 7.1 on the Richter scale struck Tibet on Tuesday morning, with strong tremors felt as far as Nepal and India, according to the US Geological Survey.

Chinese media reported at least 32 fatalities so far, as videos and pictures on social media showed widespread devastation.

Footage captured buildings collapsing and debris scattering across streets, while residents panicked and rushed to safety.

The quake primarily impacted the Changsuo, Quluo, and Cuoguo townships in Dingri County.

Considerable damage was also reported in the towns of Xigaze and Lhatse, where multiple buildings were reduced to rubble, leaving debris strewn across affected areas.

The earthquake struck at 9:05 am local time and was followed by several aftershocks, the strongest measuring 4.1 magnitude. In Nepal’s capital, Kathmandu, residents evacuated their homes in fear after experiencing the strong tremors.

Authorities warn that the full scale of destruction and loss of life will take time to assess as the region grapples with the aftermath of the earthquake.
