A medical student in Indian Gujrat died after being forced to stand for three hours by senior students during ragging at GMERS Medical College. Following the incident, second-year students involved have been suspended indefinitely.
The incident occurred at the college hostel, where 18-year-old Anil Methaniya, a first-year MBBS student, was forced to stand along with other junior students.
Authorities registered a case of homicide against several students, and an anti-ragging committee was established to thoroughly investigate the matter.
The committee is tasked with identifying and punishing those responsible for the act.
College Dean Dr Hardik Shah stated, “The student was rushed to the hospital after he collapsed, and despite attempts to revive him, he was declared dead. His classmates reported that Anil Methaniya died after being forced to stand for three hours and introduce himself to seniors at the college hostel.”
The senior students responsible for the ragging incident on Saturday night have been suspended from the hostel and prohibited from participating in academic activities until the investigation is completed.
A witness student said, “They forced us to keep standing and told us not to get agitated. In the end, a student who was also standing with us collapsed. We rushed him to the hospital, where he died.”
Police have registered an FIR against 15 second-year students, on the charges of carrying out “physical and mental torture” during the incident.
