Following a strong response from Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has announced the conclusion of its military mission in Yemen and the repatriation of its personnel.

On Tuesday, the UAE Ministry of Defence stated that its counter-terrorism units deployed in Yemen would voluntarily end their mission.

The withdrawal will be carried out on a voluntary basis, in full coordination and cooperation with partner forces.

According to the ministry, the primary reason for this decision is to ensure the safety and security of personnel stationed in Yemen. The decision comes after a comprehensive review in light of recent developments and security concerns.

The statement further noted that the UAE’s direct military presence in Yemen had already ended in 2019. The move aligns with the UAE’s longstanding commitment to regional peace and stability.

Since 2015, the UAE has supported the legitimate government of Yemen under the Arab coalition. Following the achievement of objectives in 2019, its military presence was limited to specialised counter-terrorism units, which are now being recalled.

The ministry highlighted the significant sacrifices made by UAE personnel in pursuit of peace and stability in Yemen.

The announcement comes in the wake of Saudi airstrikes targeting alleged weapons-laden vehicles at a Yemeni port.

According to Reuters, Saudi Arabia had previously issued a stark warning, accusing the UAE of pressuring southern Yemeni separatists into military operations that reached Saudi borders. This represents the toughest stance Saudi Arabia has taken against the UAE to date.

While both nations were previously part of a coalition against Iran-aligned Houthi forces in Yemen, their interests have diverged in recent years.
