In an effort to promote interfaith harmony, the Deputy Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for the British county of Surrey has been voluntarily fasting throughout the month of Ramadan.
Surrey Police introduced an initiative called the "Fasting Collective," encouraging non-Muslims to participate in the holy month of Ramadan by fasting for a day.
Deputy Police Comissioner, Ellie Vesey-Thompson also participated in the initiative and observed fast to gain firsthand experience of the difficulties Muslims face while maintaining daily routines.
In an interview to British media, the 29-year-old officer said, “For me, understanding different people’s faiths is really important and I think we would have a kinder world if we were more accepting of each other.”
Ellie, who identifies as Christian, said that fasting during Ramadan made her realise there is a lack of support for people who fast while managing their daily tasks.
“What I’ve noticed is how difficult it is for people to carry on with their normal jobs and to keep the focus and to do everything that’s demanded of them, she said.
“Particularly when thinking about our police officers who are out and about, they’re quite active, it can be really challenging,” Surrey’s deputy police chief added.
The Muslim community members were surprised Ms Vesey-Thompson decided to fast during Ramadan, because they understand how difficult it can be.
