A tumultuous combination of intense dust storms followed by heavy rainfall wreaked havoc in Mumbai on Monday evening, resulting in chaos as poles, scaffolding, and trees were uprooted across multiple areas.
Ghatkopar bore the brunt of the devastation, with at least 54 individuals sustaining injuries, and many others finding themselves trapped beneath a colossal billboard that collapsed onto a petrol pump.
The calamity unfolded at the Police Ground petrol pump along the Eastern Express Highway in Pantnagar. Disturbing visuals captured numerous vehicles ensnared beneath the fallen billboard.
In response, a team from the National Disaster Response Force has mobilized to assist in the rescue efforts, as confirmed by Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani to news agency PTI.
"The injured have been expeditiously transported to the civic-run Rajawadi Hospital," affirmed the official.
Owing to the adverse weather conditions and dust storm, flight operations at Mumbai airport were temporarily halted for approximately one hour, leading to the diversion of at least 15 flights.
The India Meteorological Department cautioned of sustained strong winds in certain areas over the ensuing four hours, urging residents to exercise vigilance.
