Renowned Pakistani surgeon and philanthropist Dr Adeeb Rizvi has been honoured with the prestigious British Medical Journal (BMJ) Award in recognition of his invaluable contributions to the field of medicine in South Asia.
The BMJ annually pays tribute to exceptional medical professionals, researchers, and institutions that have demonstrated excellence and innovation in healthcare.
This year’s award ceremony was held in New Delhi, where Dr Sanjay Nagra, Co-Chairman of the BMJ Advisory Board, announced the accolade and paid glowing tribute to Professor Rizvi.
Dr Nagra praised Dr Rizvi for introducing a groundbreaking healthcare delivery model in Pakistan, highlighting it as a remarkable example of successful collaboration between the government and civil society.

He commended Dr Rizvi’s lifelong dedication to providing free, high-quality medical care to all individuals, regardless of caste, color, race, or religion.
Although Dr Rizvi was unable to attend the event in person, he addressed the audience via video link.
In his address, he lauded BMJ’s initiative in recognising medical excellence and praised the journal’s role in advancing medical education and research across the region.
He urged the BMJ editorial board to encourage other medical institutions in South Asia to adopt the SIUT model, a reference to the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation (SIUT), which he co-founded nearly five decades ago at Civil Hospital Karachi.
What began as a modest initiative has since evolved into a world-class medical facility, offering advanced treatment in urology, nephrology, organ transplantation, and other related disciplines.
