An old video of renowned actor Hamza Ali Abbasi discussing the context of polygamy in Islam has resurfaced on social media. He highlighted that while Islam permits multiple marriages, it comes with specific conditions and circumstances that must be considered.
Abbasi emphasised that the Holy Quran stresses fairness and made it imperative that a husband should treat hs wives equally.
His remarks on polygamy have resurfaced amid renewed debate following recent statements by Fiza Ali and Danish Taimoor on the subject.
Social media users are actively sharing their opinions on the complexities, responsibilities, and cultural perceptions surrounding multiple marriages.
Clarifying his own stance, Abbasi stated that he has no intention of marrying again. He also explained the circumstances under which polygamy was permitted in Islam.
“The Quran allows polygamy in specific and extraordinary situations,” said the actor.

“It was allowed after the battle of Uhud when women and children were left helpless , there were no social institutions to take care of them. At that time, Allah almighty ordered to take care of orphans,” he explained.
Hamza, furthermore, elucidated the verses of the Holy Quran: “And if you could not take care of them [orphans], you may marry with their mothers, while one, two, three, and four.”
"However, Allah also warns that maintaining justice among multiple wives is difficult; therefore, it is better to marry only one," he said.
Hamza stated that Allah did not mandate polygamy, but rather, the directive limited men to marrying a maximum of four wives only, as “Arabs had a tradition of unlimited marriages.” Thus, the guidelines restricted them to four marriages while emphasising that only one marriage remains the most preferred practice.
