Foreign Office of Pakistan on Sunday dismissed as unfounded the concerns raised by the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights about the country’s 27th Constitutional Amendment, saying the criticism overlooked Pakistan’s own explanations and the legal process behind the change.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said the amendment was passed by a two-thirds majority in Parliament and emphasised that, as in other parliamentary democracies, constitutional matters fall solely within the authority of elected lawmakers.

The ministry stressed that democratic processes are the foundation for safeguarding political and civil rights in the country.

It reiterated that Pakistan remains committed to upholding human rights, human dignity and the rule of law as guaranteed by its Constitution.

While acknowledging the role of the UN human rights office, the Foreign Office expressed disappointment that what it called Pakistan’s “views and ground realities” were missing from the High Commissioner’s remarks.Pakistan Rejects UN Rights Chief’s

It urged the UN official to “respect the sovereign decisions of Pakistan’s parliament” and refrain from commentary the ministry described as politically biased or based on misinformation.
