Punjab is expected to receive 25 per cent more monsoon rainfall this year, the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA) said on Wednesday.

According to a statement by the PDMA, monsoon showers have already started in Punjab, with the initial phase expected to continue till July 1. Most districts in the province are likely to recieve rain accompanied by strong winds and thunderstorms.

Relief Commissioner Punjab Nabeel Javed has directed all commissioners and deputy commissioners to remain vigilant. He noted that all relevant departments, including Rescue 1122 and WASA, have been put on high alert.

The PDMA said that cities such as Rawalpindi, Murree, Galiyat, Attock, Chakwal, Mandi Bahauddin, Hafizabad, Gujarat, Jhelum, and Gujranwala are likely to receive rain accompanied by gusty winds.

Similar weather is forecast for Lahore, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Narowal, Toba Tek Singh, Jhang, Sargodha, and Mianwali.

In south Punjab, including Multan, Dera Ghazi Khan, Bahawalpur, and Bahawalnagar, rainfall is anticipated between June 26 and 28.

Acting on the chief minister’s directives, PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia has issued an alert to all district administrations. “Monsoon rains are predicted to be 25pc more this year,” he said.

“An alert has been issued to the Department of Health, Irrigation, Construction and Communications, Local Government and Livestock,” he added.

He urged the public to be cautious during severe weather. “Citizens are requested to take precautionary measures in extreme weather conditions, stay in safe locations during thunderstorms and avoid unnecessary travel.” He also advised tourists to plan their trips in line with weather forecasts.

Heavy rainfall could also trigger landslides in hilly areas like Murree and Galiyat, he warned. He recommended staying indoors to avoid lightning-related risks and said that citizens can contact the PDMA’s helpline at 1129 for emergencies.
