Two minor boys drowned while bathing in a water-filled pit on a vacant plot in the Gulshan-e-Maymar area of Karachi, police and rescue officials said on Saturday.

The incident occurred in Dhani Bakhsh Goth within the Site Superhighway area, where the children reportedly drowned in a pit filled with water on an empty plot. Residents, with the help of volunteers from Chhipa Welfare Association, retrieved the bodies and shifted them to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital.

According to Chhipa spokesperson Chaudhry Shahid, the deceased were identified as 11-year-old Waseem, son of Siddiq, and 10-year-old Mohammad Zeeshan, son of Amir Mohammad. Both children were residents of the same locality.

He said the boys had entered the water to bathe due to the intense heat when they accidentally drowned.

Police said efforts were under way to trace the owner of the vacant plot. Officials added that the site had neither a watchman nor a boundary wall, terming it negligence on the part of the owner.

Police further stated that a case would be registered and legal action taken against the plot owner if the victims’ families approached authorities for registration of an FIR.
