Monsoon rains lashed various areas of Karachi on Saturday morning, turning the city’s weather pleasant. According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department, the first spell will continue till July 2.
The met office said strong showers were recorded in Bahadurabad, Tariq Road, Dhoraji, Stadium Road, and PECHS. Rain also continued around Jinnah International Airport, PAF Base Faisal, Drig Road, Karsaz, and Saddar on Sharah-e-Faisal.
The first spell of the recent monsoon season began late Thursday night, causing water accumulation in low-lying areas and on major roads. While the rain brought welcome relief from the intense summer heat.
In response, a spokesperson for the Sindh government said the Karachi urban administration, in coordination with the local government department, is actively addressing the situation. Efforts are underway to clear waterlogged roads, and sanitation teams have been mobilised across the city.
All relevant departments have been alerted. The process of draining rainwater is ongoing, and cleanliness drives are also being conducted to prevent further blockages, the spokesperson added.
Despite the administrative response, commuters continued to face difficulties due to traffic congestion and slippery roads. In several areas, shopkeepers struggled to keep water from entering their businesses.
Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary travel and cooperate with municipal workers. Meanwhile, the Pakistan Meteorological Department has forecast more intermittent rain spells over the coming days.
While the showers brought much-needed respite from the heat, Karachi once again finds itself grappling with its long-standing urban flooding challenges.
