YouTube, which removed its private messaging feature in 2019, is once again testing the functionality on its platform. The trial is currently limited to select users.
Eligible users can now share videos through messages within the mobile app. B
y clicking the share button, they can open a full-screen chat interface to start one-on-one or group conversations. Recipients can respond with videos, emojis, or text messages.
According to the company, the feature is currently being tested in Ireland and Poland. This is a positive update for many users, as previously YouTube videos could only be shared via text, email, WhatsApp, Instagram Direct, or other messaging platforms. YouTube noted that demand for this feature has been consistently high.
While the feature was removed in 2019 without a detailed explanation, the current trial requires sending an invite before starting a chat. Users must be at least 18 years old to participate during this testing phase.
The platform has also integrated familiar controls such as “unsend” messages, block, and report options. Messages will be subject to the same YouTube Community Guidelines that apply to videos and comments.
