The federal government has formed a three-member investigation committee to probe the death of Superintendent of Police (SP) Adeel Akbar, who reportedly committed suicide in his vehicle near a hotel in Islamabad on Thursday.

SP Akbar, who served as the zonal police chief for the Industrial Area, was found with gunshot wounds to his head at around 4:30 pm while returning to his office. The weapon involved in the incident has been recovered, and forensic experts have examined ballistic evidence to help establish the sequence of events.

Speaking to the media, State Minister for Interior Talal Chaudhry said that the initial inquiry suggests SP Akbar shot himself inside his vehicle. The minister added that the three-member committee had been formed in consultation with him and the Interior Ministry, and will conduct a thorough investigation.

The committee, led by the Inspector General of Islamabad and comprising DIG Headquarters, DIG Islamabad, and DIG Security, will examine all aspects of the case.

Its responsibilities include contacting SP Akbar’s family, relatives, and close associates, as well as reviewing his call records and other relevant evidence. The findings of the investigation will also be shared with Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

The IGP Islamabad described the incident as “deeply tragic” for the police force, adding that there was no evidence of an external attack. The precise motive and circumstances surrounding the alleged suicide remain under investigation.
